Study on Reducing the Phenolic Harmful Ingredients in Mainstream Smoke with Various Carbon Hollow Material

    • In order to reduce harmful phenolic ingredients in the mainstream smoke, different carbon hollow materials were synthesized through ferrous oxalate with ethanol, cyclohexanol, polyethylene glycol 400 and polyethylene glycol 600, respectively. These different carbon hollow materials were characterized via Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) and BET specific surface area analyzer. These materials were applied in composite filter for testing the removal efficiency for phenolic compounds. The results showed that these carbon hollow materials had excellent adsorption capability for catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, phenol, o-cresol, m-cresol and cresol phenolic harmful ingredients in the mainstream smoke. The adsorption capability of carbon hollow material prepared from ethanol was much higher than those of other samples and activated carbon material. The adsorption efficiency of carbon hollow material prepared from ethanol was more than 50% for phenolic harmful ingredients and it could significantly reduce the phenolic harmful ingredients in the mainstream smoke.
