Abstract:
To investigate the effects of nitrogen application rate on aroma components and quality of cigar tobacco leaves of different varieties, four cigar tobacco varieties, HY201, HY204, HY101, and HY103, were used as experimental materials, and three nitrogen application rates, 180 kg/hm
2 (N1), 210 kg/hm
2 (N2), and 240 kg/hm
2 (N3), were established to study the effects of nitrogen application rate on the growth, leaf yield, and post-fermentation aroma components and quality of different cigar tobacco varieties. The results showed that both variety and nitrogen rate significantly affected the agronomic traits of cigar tobacco. HY201-N1 had the highest plant height; HY204-N2 exhibited the greatest maximum leaf length and maximum leaf width, as well as the largest leaf area; and HY101-N2 had the largest stem girth and the greatest number of effective leaves. Variety significantly affected the appearance color, tissue structure, and total appearanc score of cigar tobacco leaves, while nitrogen application rate significantly affected the total appearance score. However, the interaction between variety and nitrogen application rate had no significant effect on appearance quality. The total contents of aroma component in HY201 and HY101 were higher than those in the other varieties, showing a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with increasing nitrogen rate, whereas those in HY204 and HY103 showed a decreasing trend. Variety and nitrogen application rate significantly affected the total sensory quality score. With increasing nitrogen application rate, the total sensory quality score of HY201, HY101, and HY103 increased initially and then decreased, whereas that of HY204 decreased. Neither variety nor nitrogen treatment alone significantly affected on leaf yield or output value, but their interaction significantly affected total leaf yield, filler leaf yield, and output value. HY101-N1 had the highest wrapper leaf yield and output value; HY103-N1 had the highest total leaf yield, filler leaf yield, and output value, along with relatively high wrapper leaf yield and output value; and HY201-N3 and HY204-N2 had the highest leaf yield and output value within their respective varieties. Comprehensive analysis indicated that, under the specific ecological conditions of the Hainan production region, the optimal nitrogen application rate was 210 kg/hm
2 for HY201 and HY204, and 180 kg/hm
2 for HY101 and HY103. Therefore, HY101 and HY103 are suitable for promotion as varieties primarily for wrapper leaf production.
